NHD is Over, or is it?
Since September, 8th grade GT history students have been stressing over the the “worst thing in 8th grade,” National History Day. But since Feburary 12th, NHD is now over. Well except for sixteen students (we’ll get to that later).
For anyone who doesn’t know, NHD is a national competition for history where middle and high schoolers compete around the country for a chance to go to nationals. NHD first starts in schools. After the school’s competitions, ten projects are selected to move on the the county competition. Counties are on March 12th at Reservoir high school. The top two from each category goes on to states. From states, the top two go to nationals. From nationals, the winners are crowned.
From September to end of December, 8th grade GT history students were working on a huge argument paper. First, students chose a topic. Second, they were a thesis. The thesis took many tries before the final thesis was complete. Third, students wrote an outline. The outline was 100 points. Finally, they wrote the huge 300 point argument essay. Then the hardest part of NHD was over.
From January to February 9th, the GT history students started to change their papers into projects. There are five ways to present their projects: documentry, paper, exhibit, performance, and website. Also, now students were allowed to work either individually or with a partner/group. This part was much easier than the paper because most of the research was already complete.
Finally NHD had arrived on February 12th. All the days of research, stressing, and writing has paid off. Prior to the day, all students in the competition received times and judges. Throughout the day, students left their classes to go to the media center and presented their projects. Afterwards, their judge(s) interviewed them about their research, topic, and/or anything about their project. Finally NHD was over.
Ten projects were selected to move on to the county level. Congratulations to the following students.

Top 5 Before School Tips
1. Pick out your clothes the night before.
If you pick out your clothes the night before the event, you will get to sleep in more and have more time in the morning to eat breakfast.
2. Keep on texting!
Texting simulates your hand-eye coordination and improves reading skills, just make sure you don’t get yourself in trouble and don’t text in class!
3. Do your homework!
A lot of times homework counts as 30% of your grade, if you do your homework you can easily bring your B to an A, by just doing about 20 question, which trust me on this one, don’t always take that long.
4. Spend time with your family and friends
You should always spend time with the people who care about you and would take a bullet for you any time of the day.
5. Homework Trick!
Place a small treat at the end of a paragraph or series of questions to persuade yourself to do the homework; you even don’t have to do homework on an empty stomach!
